Postural
Balancing Standing, moving and seated posture are likewise asymmetrical. This can be from unequal leg lengths, a pelvic bone 'inequality, or muscle imbalance from the way we developed. There can also be postural shifts from injury. We struggle in every standing, moving and sitting moment against gravity. The less efficiently we stand, move and sit, the more muscle energy we use in this struggle. This excessive use of muscle energy against gravity leads to fatigue and muscle ache. Postural balancing is the process of improving our standing, moving and sitting posture to help us most efficiently use our muscle energy against gravity. The process of postural balancing begins with a history and physical examination. If postural imbalance is detected, X-ray may be required. Should postural imbalance be present, interventions that might be employed include Osteopathic manipulation, heel lifts, seated lifts, and custom made arch supports. The success of this approach is tremendous. Many patients receive permanent relief from pain problems that previously required weekly or monthly maintenance visits to various therapists. |
