Compassionate Outreach for Better Health

Compassionate outreach is acting in deliberate ways for the benefit of others. In my practice, I have found that those who are involved in helping others find that their outreach gives them energy and a sense of fulfillment. Indeed, studies confirm that people with a sense of love and fulfillment in their lives are less predisposed to disease.
I have also noticed that those who willingly serve have an optimistic approach towards life in general, and in the face of disease are less likely to lapse into an attitude of surrender, victimhood, or withdrawal from activity. I commonly hear from those who serve that they receive far more than they give. Selflessly caring for others is also regularly mentioned throughout the Bible, and stands unchallenged as a behavior which is favored by God.
For some examples of compassionate outreach, I will share some of the ways my patients are serving. One patient is a walker. She regularly invites a woman along who she knows is lonely. Another likes to cook healthy foods, and makes extra for neighbors and coworkers. Still another tutors students at a low income school. One woman started taking care of the shut in next door, helping him with groceries and obtaining social services. Several others volunteer at elder care centers and hospitals. I know several people, including my own family members, who have “adopted” a child in a foreign country by donating money each month so that the child has food, clothing, education, and medical care, (www.Compassion.com). When I listen to these people talk about their experiences and the wonderful things that happen, I see the brightness in their eyes and I recognize the health benefits from the fulfillment that comes with their service.
If you are not currently involved in compassionate outreach to others, I would urge you to get involved today. It will improve your health!
